Wipers (Scrapers)

Wipers are used in pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders. Their purpose is to remove dirt, moisture, and other contaminants from the piston rod. When the rod retracts into the system, the wiper prevents contaminants from entering, helping to avoid damage to the rod, cylinder wall, and other components.

In addition, the wiper prevents premature failures and contributes to a longer cylinder service life. Despite this important function, the wiper is often underestimated.

When selecting the right wiper, it is essential to consider the profile, environmental conditions, travel speed, and temperature.

The most common wipers are single-acting, where the element serves purely as a scraper. There are also double-acting wipers (combi wipers) that function both as a rod seal and as a scraper.

Wipers are available for both open and closed grooves.

Wiper dimensions

To determine the size of your wiper, several factors are important:

The outer and inner diameter of the cylinder, the groove length, and the wiper height.

(Sometimes a wiper comes with multiple height steps.)

Wiper materials

Wipers are commonly available in NBR, Polyurethane, FKM (Viton), and PTFE.

For PTFE versions, a PTFE ring is energized by one or two O-rings.

For NBR, PU, and FKM, versions with a metal core or metal case are also available.
