Metal Seals

A metal seal – also known as a metal O-ring, C-ring, V-ring, or E-ring – is a high-performance sealing solution used in environments with extreme pressure, temperature, or chemical exposure. The sealing capability of metal is based on the high contact pressure along the sealing line and the elastic recovery of the material itself. At higher pressures, the sealing effect increases further, making metal seals ideal for vacuum applications, high-pressure systems, and nuclear or chemical installations. To enhance performance, metal seals are often provided with a coating or plating such as silver, gold, nickel, tin, indium, or PTFE (Teflon), which optimizes sealing, corrosion resistance, and durability.

Materials

Stainless steel, Inconel, Aluminum, Copper, Nickel, Silver, Gold, Tin, Indium, PTFE (Teflon)

Applications

Vacuum and ultra-high vacuum systems, hot runner systems, reactors, research laboratories, nuclear installations, diesel and combustion engines, aerospace, oil and gas extraction, petrochemical industry, hydraulics, valves, pumps, compressors, turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, chemical industry, and the iron and steel industry.

Metal Seals – Metal O-Rings – V-Rings – C-Rings

The sealing capability of a metal seal is based on the high contact pressure along the sealing line and the elastic recovery of the metal material itself. At higher pressures, the sealing performance increases further. The sealing efficiency depends on the seal type, the material used, and the thickness of the material.

To achieve an even better seal, metal seals – such as O-rings, C-rings, and V-rings – are often coated or plated with materials such as silver, gold, nickel, tin, indium, PTFE, or Teflon.

Why use a Metal O-Ring – V-Ring – C-Ring?

  • Temperature resistance up to 750°C
  • Pressure range from 500 MPa to ultra-high vacuum
  • Excellent resistance to corrosion and nuclear radiation
  • Available in internal diameters from 5 mm to 7 meters

Wills Rings®

Wills Rings® O is a metallic O-ring used for sealing static flange joints. It provides a reliable seal for gases and liquids across a wide temperature range. The double-acting Wills Rings® O can withstand extremely high pressures and vacuum conditions, offering long service life and excellent corrosion resistance.

They are available in pressure-filled, solid, hollow, and system pressure-activated versions made of stainless steel, copper, or Inconel® 600. Rotating and reciprocating Wills Rings® can be plated with silver, nickel, or PTFE.

Wills Rings® operate in a temperature range up to 850°C and a pressure range up to 1,000 MPa (145,000 PSI). A wide variety of sizes and configurations is available.

Applications

Metal seals (O-rings, C-rings, V-rings, energised seals) are used in: vacuum and ultra-high vacuum systems, plastic moulding, hot runners, particle accelerators, research laboratories, reactors, nuclear installations, diesel and other engines, aerospace, petrochemical and oil & gas industries, hydraulics, valves, pumps, compressors, turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, the chemical industry, and the steel industry.

  • Ideal where elastomer seals are limited by temperature, corrosion, radiation, pressure, gas permeability, or lifespan.
  • Perfect for environments where rubber seals or standard O-rings cannot be used.
