Round Cords / X-Profiles / Square Cords

Round cord, X-profile and square cord are versatile sealing cords used in hydraulic, pneumatic and industrial systems. They serve as seals, filler cords, or as base material for producing custom-made O-rings. A round cord is ideal for standard sealing applications and can easily be cut to length and bonded with, for example, Loctite 406. The X-profile (also known as X-ring or quad-ring) is particularly suitable for dynamic applications due to its special shape, which prevents twisting in the groove and allows better lubricant distribution. The square cord is mainly used in static seals under high pressure, thanks to its larger sealing surface and stable positioning. Techniparts supplies all these sealing profiles on rolls or custom-made, in various materials and hardnesses.

Round Cord – X-Profile – Square Cord

Round Cord

Making O-Rings from Round Cord

When the correct O-ring size is not available, you can easily make one yourself using round cord. Simply cut the cord to the desired length and bond the ends together using a fast-acting adhesive. Loctite 406 is a suitable glue for this application.

X-Profile Cord (Quad Rings)

What Is X-Profile?

The name X-profile refers to the cross-section shape of the cord. Due to its X-shape, the cord does not rotate in its groove, making it ideal for dynamic sealing applications. The X-ring therefore has advantages over the traditional O-ring when surfaces are in motion. When lubricants are used, they collect between the sealing lips, improving lubrication and sealing performance.

Advantages of X-Rings – Quad Rings

When an O-ring is used in a sliding application, it can twist within its groove, potentially damaging the ring and causing leaks. To prevent this, an X-ring is used. The X-ring has four sealing lips that reduce friction and prevent twisting — this design gives it its name “X-ring” or “Quad Ring”.

  • Does not rotate in the groove
  • Ideal for dynamic applications
  • Lubricant collects between the sealing lips
  • No flashline on sealing surfaces
