How is gland packing used?

Gland packing serves as a seal between a rotating shaft and its housing. The rope-like material is wrapped around the shaft of a pump. This ensures that liquids such as oil and water do not leak along the shaft.

Where are gland packings used for?

A well-known example for which a gland packing is used is in shipping. On a boat, the gland gasket is located near the propeller so that the propeller can still turn, but the water remains outside the boat.
